1783 Anderson, Thomas, Lynaugh, Oliver Deed (Craven County)

I love deeds like this that reveal information about the women who signed them. So often, it’s hard to uncover a woman’s maiden name when no marriage bonds are on record, but a deed in which the woman has to agree to sell the land is a great way of discovering her family.

The deed below is between John THOMAS and his wife Elizabeth LYNAUGH THOMAS along with Mary LYNAUGH ANDERSON (the wife of George ANDERSON) and Thomas OLIVER, all of Craven County. While there is a marriage bond for Mary and George ANDERSON, I have not found a marriage bond for John THOMAS and Elizabeth LYNAUGH.


10 March 1783

This Indenture made this Tenth Day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and Eighty three Between John THOMAS and Elizabeth his Wife and Mary ANDERSON of the one part, and Thomas OLIVER of the County of Craven in the State of North Carolina of the other part Witnesseth that the said John THOMAS and Elizabeth his Wife and Mary ANDERSON for and in Consideration of the sum of Twenty pounds specie to them in hand paid Have Granted Bargained and sold and by these presents Do Grant Bargain and sell Convey and Confirm unto the said Thomas Oliver his Heirs and Assigns a Certain piece or parcell of Land lying and being in the Town of New Bern Containing One Quarter of an Acre be the same more or Less being the northernmost part of two Lotts situate on Johnston and Hancock Streets which were granted to Cornelius HARNETT by Deed Dated the 17th July 1770 and the said one Quarter of an acre being the northernmost part o the said two Lots which are Numbered in the plan of said Town by the numbers Three Hundred and thirty nine and Three Hundred and 40 was by Deed from the said Cornelius HARNETT Conveyed to Thomas LYNAUGH bearing Date 27th February 1773 and the said Thomas Lynaugh Dying Intestate the said one Quarter of an Acre of Land as aforesaid became vested in the said Elizabeth THOMAS and Mary ANDERSON sisters and heirs of the Decesaed, which said One Quarter of an Acre as aforesaid contains in Breadth on Handcocks Street Fifty three feet seven Inches and a half and runs parallel to the North Bounds of said Two Lotts Two Hundred and fourteen feet six Inches to the East side of said Lots

~ To Have and to Hold the said One Quarter of an Acre or part of the said Lotts as afore particularly Bounded and Discribed with the appurtenances and all Rights Privileges and Improvements to the same in any wise belonging to him the said Thomas OLIVER …
