Will of Thomas WHITFORD (1781), Craven County

I have transcribed the will of my sixth great-grandfather Thomas Whitford below. His sons named in the will are William, Martin, Thomas, and John. He also had two daughters not named here. One was married to Mitchell STILLEY and the other was married to William SPIGHTS.


In the Name of God Amen the third Day of September 1781. I, Thomas Whitford of Craven County planter being Sick and in a very low Compsity but in perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God Therefore Calling unto mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye do make and ordain this my Last Will and testament in the following words first of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body to the EArth from Whence it was raised to be Buried at the Discression of Who Ever it falls into the hands of at the time Appointed

Item I give and Bequathe unto my Son WILLIAM WHITFORD one plentation and tract of land whereon I now live Containing one hundred and thirty five acres lying and being in Craven County on the West Side of upper broad Creek to him and his heirs. I also give and bequathe unto my Son WILLIAM WHITFORD one tract of Land Contaning one hundred and fifty acares lying and being in the County of Craven on the north Side of Nuce River and upon the North west prong of upper broad Creek and on the Mudy branch to him and his heirs

Item I give and bequathe unto my son WILLIAM WHITFORD one hourse called Dolfin and one horse called burd to him and his heirs and all my other householde furniture goods and chattles to him and his heirs Exceping One Church Bible and one iron pot and one Kow called brity ? and one horse I give to my son MARTIN WHITFORD to him and his heirs I also give and bequathe unto my son THOMAS WHITFORD one two year oulde heffer to him and his heirs

I allso give and bequathe unto my son JOHN WHITFORD one kow called Swan to him and his heirs

Item allso I give and bequathe utno my son in law WILLIAM SPIGHTS one Shilling Starling to be paide out of my Estate by Executors

Item allso I give and bequathe unto my Son in law (MITCHEL STILLEY interlined before signed) one Shilling Starling to be paid out of my Estate by my Exacatoars.

I acknowledge these above written word to be my last Will and testement given under my hand and seal the Day and year above mentioned Sealed Signed and Delivered in the presents of us

September Craven County Court 1781. The within last Will and Testament of THOMAS WHITFORD Deceased was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of John Thomas one of the Subscribing Witnesses who swore that he was present and did see the Testator Sign Seal Publish and Declare the same to be and contain his last Will and Testament that at the time thereof he the Testator was of sound disposing mind and memory —— William Whitford one of the Executors therein named took the Oath of an Executor according to ?? Ordered that Letters Testamentory issue accordingly.
